What Every Renter Should Know About Power Outages

Power outages can happen unexpectedly, whether they're caused by severe weather, equipment failures, or routine maintenance. While they're often temporary, knowing what to do before, during, and after an outage can help keep you and your home safe.

1. Keep an Emergency Kit Ready

It's always a good idea to have a flashlight, extra batteries, bottled water, a portable phone charger, and a basic first aid kit on hand. Avoid relying on candles, as they can become a fire hazard.

2. Protect Your Food

Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. A refrigerator will generally keep food cold for about four hours if left unopened, while a full freezer can maintain its temperature for up to 48 hours.

3. Unplug Sensitive Electronics

When the power goes out, unplug televisions, computers, gaming systems, and other sensitive electronics to help protect them from power surges when electricity is restored. Leave one lamp plugged in so you'll know when power has returned.

4. Know When to Contact Your Property Manager

If the outage only affects your rental home while neighboring homes still have power, check your breaker panel first. If resetting the breaker doesn't resolve the issue, contact your property management team. If the outage is neighborhood-wide, report it to your utility company and monitor updates before submitting a maintenance request.

5. Stay Safe and Be Prepared

If temperatures become extreme or the outage lasts longer than expected, follow local guidance and consider relocating to a safe location if necessary. Keep your phone charged when possible and stay informed through local news or your utility provider's outage alerts.

A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way

While no one can predict when the power will go out, being prepared can make the experience much less stressful. Taking a few simple steps before an outage occurs can help protect your belongings, keep you safe, and make it easier to get back to normal once the lights come back on.
