Simple Home Security Habits Every Renter Should Know
Simple Home Security Habits Every Renter Should Know
October may be known for spooky season, but feeling secure at home should never be scary. It is also Crime Prevention Month, making this a timely opportunity to take a closer look at a few everyday habits that can help renters feel more confident at home.
September’s REALTOR® Safety Month reminded us of the importance of awareness and preparation throughout the real estate industry. At Watson Realty Corp., that conversation included our new partnership with Bond, a preventative personal security resource available to Watson agents. While that initiative focuses on our real estate professionals, the larger message applies well beyond September: thoughtful safety habits are worth practicing all year long.
For renters, home security does not have to mean complicated technology or major changes to the property. A few simple routines can make a meaningful difference. Take a look at our top 5 habits for keeping your rental property safe.
1. Make Locking Up Part of Your Routine
It sounds simple, but it’s often forgotten: consistently locking exterior doors and windows is one of the easiest habits to build. Check them before leaving home and again before going to bed, including less frequently used doors or windows that may be easy to overlook.
If a lock, latch, or exterior door does not seem to be working properly, do not try to make permanent repairs or modifications yourself. Let your property management team at Watson know so the concern can be evaluated and handled quickly.
2. Keep Entrances Visible and Well Lit
Good visibility around doors, walkways, and entry points can make coming and going easier, especially as daylight hours begin to shorten in the fall.
If an existing exterior light at your rental is not working, report it to your property manager. Renters considering additional security lighting, cameras, video doorbells, or other devices should also check their lease and contact property management before installing anything that could require drilling, wiring, or alterations to the home.
Additionally, keep windows and doors clean and clear for visibility.
3. Do Not Let Packages Linger
Online shopping picks up as we head toward the holiday season, which means more packages may be arriving at your door. When possible, track deliveries and bring packages inside promptly.
If you will not be home, consider delivery options such as requiring a signature, arranging for a trusted person to collect the package, or requesting that eligible mail or packages be held for pickup. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service recommends promptly collecting mail and packages rather than allowing them to remain unattended for extended periods.
4. Be Thoughtful About Spare Keys
A spare key can be convenient, but avoid leaving one in an obvious outdoor hiding place. Instead, consider leaving a spare with a trusted family member, friend, or neighbor when appropriate.
Also be mindful about who has access to your home. If a key is lost or you have a concern about your locks, contact your property management team rather than changing or replacing locks without authorization.
5. Speak Up When Something Does Not Seem Right
You know your rental home and surroundings better than anyone. If you notice a damaged lock, broken exterior light, window that will not secure properly, or another property-related concern, report it promptly.
Watson Property Management residents can use the online tenant portal to submit maintenance requests and communicate with their property management team at any time. For an immediate emergency or suspected criminal activity, contact the appropriate emergency or local law enforcement services first.
Make Safety an Everyday Habit
Crime Prevention Month is a helpful reminder, but good home security habits matter throughout the year. Taking a few extra seconds to lock a window, collect a package, check an entryway, or report a concern can become part of an everyday routine that helps you feel more comfortable in your rental home.
At Watson Property Management, providing a positive rental experience means being there when our residents need us. From everyday questions to property-related concerns, our team is committed to reliable service, responsive communication, and helping residents feel at home.
